NAMING DAY CEREMNONY:
A child’s naming day is an occasion when a new birth is celebrated, a child is welcomed into the world and its name is recognized within the family community. It can also be a day when children of a new relationship are recognized. It is an important occasion for parents and all family members and a time to recognize the significant event that has taken place in your lives.
On these days family relationships are deepened, parents become more fully aware of their responsibilities as do the godparents / mentors / guardians.
The Naming Day ceremony is not a religious ceremony, baptism or christening as such ceremonies belong to specific groups, however readings are commonly included and the child usually has “Godparents” or “Life guardians” appointed.
I want to add that not all godparents/ mentors etc are automatically legal guardians if anything should happen to the parents. The children’s legal guardians are usually arranged thru the parents Legal Wills. It is most important that you discuss and agree about the responsibilities of your child’s mentors with the people you have chosen.
Ceremonies can be individually compiled to reflect the wishes of the parents and during the ceremony we can recognise the parents / grandparents / great grandparents / godparents / siblings and any other significant guests. We can also include various rituals that can be part of the theme or in some way enhance the meaning of the ceremony – eg wedding candle can be used to light the candle for the child’s naming, grandmothers/fathers can welcome the child into the family as the “new generation”.
There are all sorts of ideas – bubbles, sprinkling of rose petals/ release of butterflies / balloons / memory box / fairies/ time capsule/ a family heirloom or keepsake from family members or a St Christopher’s medal symbolising protection during the child’s travel through the journey of life.
I use a battery operated PA so the ceremony can be heard by all and I can supply a table with cover to the ground and various candle holders / vases / coloured sands for use on the day. I have a range of reference material on appropriate poems or readings.
Godparents, guardians / mentors may be appointed as part of the ceremony, and each will receive a certificate of appointment.
RENEWAL OF VOWS:
These ceremonies can be called a Celebration of Marriage or Renewal of Vows. I must see some form of proof of the original marriage ceremony.
It can be very moving and meaningful for a couple to repeat vows they made many years before.
Children both young or grown can be a part of the ceremony and enhance the beliefs that the couple made before the children’s time. I like to have at least one meeting with the couple and then work with them to create an expressive ceremony that can be held on a particular date or as part of an anniversary or birthday celebration.
There are many readings and ideas that can personalize your ceremony and enrich the meaning of celebrating the years that have been shared together and of course using particular songs, readings or rituals that they had at their original marriage ceremony makes it even more significant.
Reaffirming original vows and exchanging rings can all be a part of the ceremony.

People who are already legally married to each other cannot have another ceremony that purports to be an original marriage ceremony but by performing a renewal of vows ceremony we recognize those promises they made to one another previously.
Commitment Ceremonies are a celebration of the bond of love between two people. With the current laws in most states and territories of Australia it is not yet a legal commitment. A commitment to a loved one is a one of the most significant moments in a person’s life. And regardless of your sex, age or cultural background I would love to work with you to create a cherished moment in your life.
However you decide to celebrate this moment, it is important to take some time to reflect on your feelings, your love for each other, and your commitment to each other.
** Please note – there are no legal benefits to having a Commitment Ceremony. The difference is that rather than being a legally binding ceremony, it is a public affirmation of a couples commitment to one another.
Please ring or email me so we can have a chat about what you would like, see if I am available for your planned date and make arrangements for a meeting at which we can get to know one another a little and I can advise you of the ideas and options for creating a meaningful ceremony for you.

Once we have had our meeting the fun of putting your ceremony together begins. We can meet as often as you like or complete it all by email / phone contact. Your ceremony can be as simple as just a few words between yourselves and your witnesses or it can be grand and include all the ideas that you have been saving up for your day.
Adding information that is unique to you as a couple enables me to create a ceremony which is morerealistic and appropriate to yourselves and your guests so I willingly listen and consider how to best incorporate your ideas – be it family tradition, different beliefs or just that notion you have been saving up for your special day. I can also offer ideas that may enhance your ceremony, give it a special touch to make it a more memorable occasion and help you include family members, children and friends on the day.
